Alternative Oxford walking tour.
Day trip
Walking is, without doubt, the easiest way to keep healthy.
Moving blood around the body and lightening the mind.
Inspired by Phillip Pulman books here is some of the 7km walk from one end of Oxford to another. Juxon Street in the neighbourhood of Jericho like the name of the book, in the north of the city.
Start at the Ashmolean Museum you are heading in the area behind
following Walton street until you come to a quiet area that has some cool cafés, Juxon St that features in the book is an
interesting mix of homes from old barracks, colourful terraced houses and
modern balconies. Walking past this street we can follow the sign to link with
a canal towpath that takes us back to the city.
Here we can stop at Gloucester Green, where there is often a
street food market on the weekends.
Once in the city, pick up the 'high street', not to be confused
with Cornmarket St, head towards the Botanical gardens and keep walking until
you reach a fork in the road and take the right, Iffley road, not far down here
you will come to a running track, this is where the 4 min mile was broken back
in 1954. You can walk round to the entrance of the sports centre, inside there
is a display and details of what happened. there is also a café too.
Back to the centre of town, if you want more history then a
quick visit to the Townhall as there are some interesting details about Oxford
here.
Of course, to get the best photo of the University City, we need
to go up the Tower of St Mary’s Church (£5) to the balcony for an amazing view
over the Spires and Radcliffe Camera
Finally, call into Blackwell’s book shop and pick up the latest
Pulman novel too and see the Author’s Photo on the stairs down to the amazing
book room.
History, fiction and real-life all mixed into one day!
